The profitability challenges for Services groups in a “perma-crisis” world

The past five years have been a period of constant challenges for the Business Services sector — from the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation to geopolitical tensions, rapid technological change, and shifts in the labour market. What does the future hold for the industry?

We are pleased to present the report from the latest study, The profitability challenges for Services groups in a "perma - crisis" world, which JP Weber had the pleasure of co-developing with Eight Advisory as the Polish arm of the global advisory organization Eight International.

As part of the project, we conducted interviews with 82 companies across 10 countries, representing a total of over one million employees and reflecting the diversity of the entire sector. The report highlights the key challenges, success factors, and best practices shaping the future of business services in Europe.

The Enduring Impact of Crisis

Business Services are a cornerstone of Europe’s economy, generating about 23% of the EU’s total output and benefiting from a skilled workforce, advanced infrastructure, and strong entrepreneurship.

Over the past five years, the sector has faced continuous shocks — from the pandemic and geopolitical conflicts to political instability and growing trade tensions. 65% of executives now express rising concern about the uncertain geopolitical climate.

With inflation and supply chain pressures still present, companies are shifting focus toward resilience — reassessing locations, managing risk exposure, and building stronger operational foundations.

Rethinking the Workforce

Talent management has become a key challenge. As expectations around flexibility, purpose, and work-life balance rise, traditional labour models are losing relevance. Many companies are restructuring operations, improving productivity, and strengthening employer branding to attract and retain skilled employees.

AI as a Catalyst for Change

Artificial intelligence is reshaping Business Services — driving efficiency, innovation, and competitiveness. Yet adoption is uneven, with legacy systems and low digital readiness slowing progress. In a fast-evolving market, transformation speed has become a key differentiator.

Building Resilience for the Future

The white paper identifies nine core principles of resilience — from diversifying revenue streams to refining organisational structures and pricing models.
